Fashion as a Cycle

Fashion can be considered a cycle because it is always constantly changing and new trends are always coming out. Fashion, not only creates new trends, but also brings back old trends. For example, saggy jeans that would be worn in the 1980’s are becoming really popular nowadays. George B. Sproles states in the article that “Fashions are, by definition, temporary cyclical phenomena adopted by consumers for a particular time and situation. Furthermore, fashions evolve consistent with the theoretical product life cycle, having stages of introduction and adoption by fashion leaders, increasing public acceptance, mass conformity, and the inevitable decline and obsolescence awaiting all fashions.” George also mentions how fashion is used in social economic classes. People who are higher in social economic classes will dress way different than those in a lower class, so those who want to feel in an upper class will use fashion to look like them in a way.  This is how people use fashion to feel on the same social level as rich people are. In other cases, many of them just use different type of clothing to express themselves, their personality or how they feel. Many people will agree with what George says in his article, for example I agree with both the statements above. Fashion is like a cycle because it is never steady, people are always coming up with new things. For example, I work at Forever 21 and we are always receiving up to 20 or more boxes of shipment every Friday, and these boxes are always full of new things that we have keep up with because we have to put out new things every week, so the customers keep coming in to shop the new items and trends. And if we don’t constantly and consistently change our clothing we will lose customers because they will get bored of seeing the same thing every time they come into the store. Something I have seen that people are really into right now are boyfriend jeans, which are really baggy and ripped. Another thing is high waisted jeans with really small crop tops.
Overall I agree with what George states in his article, both in the section about fashion being a cycle and how people dress different in different socioeconomic classes because many of these situations are relatable.

  1. The main purpose of this blog was how fashion is a constant trend and it almost never stays the same but also we find that trends come back into popularity after some time. The author used their source effectively because they put the authors main idea and then why they agreed with it using their personal experience. In order to make this post better I think they can incorporate their other source. This post makes me wonder how it happened that old trends that were once popular became a trend again. Were their trendsetters that brought them back?
